💡 Inside a Solo 401(k) or Roth IRA, selling to rebalance has zero tax consequences — buy and sell away. In a taxable brokerage account, try directing new contributions toward the underweight funds to avoid triggering capital gains tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I rebalance a larger portfolio?

Same as any portfolio — once or twice a year, or whenever a position drifts more than 5 percentage points from its target. More funds doesn't mean more frequent rebalancing. It just means more lines to check when you do.

Does rebalancing trigger taxes?

Not inside a Solo 401(k), Roth IRA, or HSA — trade freely with no tax consequences. In taxable accounts, selling appreciated positions creates capital gains. Consider rebalancing by directing new contributions into underweight positions instead.

What allocation should I use?

That depends on your age, risk tolerance, and timeline. If you're not sure where to start, the Three-Fund Portfolio is a proven starting point. This calculator comes with presets for a Three-Fund (65/25/10) and Four-Fund (55/25/10/10 with REITs) to give you a baseline.
